Kolkata: The Suvendu Adhikari government has put restrictions on animal slaughter, with the administration ordering strict compliance to West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950, to regulate cattle slaughter and related commercial activities.

“Slaughtering of animals…shall be prohibited in any open public place,” the order read, adding that violations could lead to a six-month jail term, ₹1,000 fine or both. In a directive to senior police officers on Wednesday night, the government said illegal cattle markets and unauthorised slaughterhouses would not be allowed.

“No person shall slaughter any animal thereby (bulls, bullocks, cows, calves, male and female buffalos, buffalo calves and castrated buffalos) unless he has obtained in respect thereof a certificate that the animal is fit for slaughter,” the order said.
The order read, “The chairman of a municipality or the sabhapati of a panchayat samiti and a government veterinary surgeon may issue a joint certificate regarding fitness of an animal for slaughter if they are both of the opinion (to be recorded in writing) that the animal is over 14 years for work or breeding of the animal has become permanently incapacitated due to age, injury, deformity or any incurable disease.”

Adhikari also directed the police to take strict action against the use of loudspeakers beyond permissible sound limits at religious places and events across the state, officials said.
