Srinagar, Jul 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday extended the summer vacation for all government and recognised private schools across the Union Territory till July 26 due to the prevailing bad weather, with schools now scheduled to reopen on Monday, July 27.
Initially announced for the Kashmir Division and the winter zones of Jammu Division, the minister later clarified that the extension would also apply to all schools in the summer zones of Jammu Division, making the order applicable across J&K.
Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, in a post on X, said the decision had been taken keeping the safety and well-being of students, teachers and their families as the foremost priority.
“Keeping the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and their families as our foremost priority, the summer vacation for all Government and recognised private schools is hereby extended up to 26th July, 2026. Schools across J&K will now reopen on Monday, 27th July, 2026,” the minister said.
The extension comes amid continued rainfall and adverse weather conditions in several parts of J&K. Heavy rains in recent days have triggered landslides, flash floods and disruption of road connectivity in many areas, affecting normal life and prompting the government to adopt precautionary measures.
The minister also appealed to the public to remain cautious and follow all advisories issued by the concerned authorities.
“I request everyone to stay safe, remain vigilant, and follow the advisories issued by the concerned authorities. Wishing everyone good health and safety,” she said.
The government has advised parents, students and school authorities to remain updated through official announcements and cooperate with the administration until weather conditions improve. The decision is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and school staff in view of the continuing spell of inclement weather across the Union Territory.
