Srinagar, Jul 20: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday reviewed the situation following heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides in several districts of the Union Territory, speaking with senior officials and directing swift relief and infrastructure restoration in affected areas.
The review came as nine more people were killed in separate rain-related incidents across Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, including seven members of two families who died after a flash flood and landslide buried a house in Poonch district and two persons killed when shooting stones struck a passenger bus in Doda district, officials said. The fresh deaths took the overall toll from the two-day spell of heavy rain to 21.
In a post on X, the Lieutenant Governor said: “I spoke to Senior Officials today to assess the impact of heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides. I am deeply saddened by the loss of two lives in Doda, and my heart goes out to their families. Emergency teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, J&K Police, and the Army are deployed and on high alert in vulnerable areas. Key roads in Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, and Udhampur have been reopened, and work to restore water supplies in several areas is ongoing. Field teams have also been directed to urgently evaluate damage to houses and public infrastructure.”
Earlier in the day, the Lieutenant Governor expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of seven lives in a tragic landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Poonch district. “A tragic landslide caused by heavy rainfall in Poonch has resulted in the loss of seven precious lives. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families during this difficult time. Senior Officials have been directed to extend immediate relief and all necessary assistance to those affected,” Sinha said in another post on X.
