Patna: A 2019-batch sub-inspector (SI) was arrested red-handed by the Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) in Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday for accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000. He was caught at a tea stall outside the police station premises.The arrested officer, who was investigating a kidnapping case, had allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 to remove the complainant’s brother’s name from the case. The amount was later negotiated down to Rs 30,000, with Rs 15,000 paid as the first instalment.The arrested SI was identified as Bhaskar Kumar Mishra, posted at Sadar police station in Muzaffarpur.The complainant said, “My brother’s name emerged as a suspect in the kidnapping case. Mishra demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 in exchange for removing the name from the case diary, providing relief to the accused, and weakening the case diary.”After negotiations, the bribe amount was settled at Rs 30,000, to be paid in two instalments.Meanwhile, the complainant submitted a written complaint at the VIB office in Patna. After verification, a VIB team in plain clothes reached Sadar police station. Mishra allegedly called the complainant to a tea shop located next to the police station. As soon as the sub-inspector accepted the bribe money, the vigilance team, which had laid a trap, arrested him.VIB DSP Sanjay Kumar stated, “Mishra was caught red-handed, and the bribe money was also recovered from him. After the arrest, he was brought to Patna, where he is being interrogated, and further legal proceedings will be completed under the Prevention of Corruption Act.”
