Gaya: To address persistent traffic congestion, improve compliance with traffic rules and reduce chaotic movement of pedestrians and vehicles, a comprehensive traffic management plan has been prepared. The plan envisages installation of an adaptive traffic control system (ATCS), automatic number plate recognition, face recognition systems and a public address system at several locations across the city, its outskirts and the Gaya-Dobhi Road. The Gaya Municipal Corporation has identified 75 points where 294 poles and 668 CCTV cameras will be installed. The project is to be completed within a stipulated timeframe.Adaptive traffic control systems are intelligent, real-time transport technologies that adjust signal timings — including green splits, cycle lengths and offsets — based on actual traffic demand rather than fixed schedules. Using sensors, cameras and AI-based algorithms, these systems optimise traffic flow, reduce congestion, cut waiting time and improve safety, making them effective in managing dynamic urban traffic conditions.Though relatively expensive, the system marks a significant upgrade over conventional fixed-time traffic lights by offering more responsive and efficient traffic management.Confirming the identification of locations for installation of state-of-the-art traffic and surveillance equipment, municipal commissioner Abhishek Palasia said the selected points include Rai Kashinath Mor, Collectorate roundabout, Mirza Ghalib College Mor and Sikaria, among others. As required, additional locations may also be included, he said. For installation of equipment at certain points between Gaya and Bodh Gaya, a no objection certificate (NOC) is required from the NHAI and the state road construction department. District magistrate Shashank Shubhankar has directed the officials concerned to expedite the process of obtaining NOCs to ensure smooth execution of the project. As per the DM’s directions, poles must be installed at fringe locations, and under no circumstances should any pole be erected in the middle of the road for traffic management purposes.According to sources, the portico of the Bar Library building has emerged as a major obstacle to smooth traffic movement between Rai Kashinath Mor and the Gaya Collectorate. Owing to poor maintenance, the structure has become redundant, and its removal or relocation would significantly ease traffic flow in the busy stretch connecting the western parts of the city with its commercial centre.
