Gurgaon: A scuffle broke out among students during a school conference in Palam Vihar on Sunday. The footage of a video shows a group of students throwing punches at each other and hurling chairs, triggering chaos at the venue of the event — Model United Nations (MUN) — being held on the premises of GEMS International School. An MUN conference is an educational simulation of the UN, where participants assume the roles of diplomats representing different countries. The reason behind the altercation is yet to be ascertained and the identities of the students involved are yet to be established, police said, adding that they are examining the viral videos and are awaiting information to determine the circumstances that led to the clash. “No complaint has been received. Taking cognizance of the matter, we have issued a notice to the school,” Palam Vihar SHO Ajay said.Responding to queries from TOI, the school clarified in an emailed statement that the event was organised by an independent organisation that had hired the campus for the programme. “We are aware of the unfortunate incident that took place on Sunday, June 28, during an MUN event held on our school premises. We would like to clarify that the event was not organised by GEMS International School. It was an independently organised event for which the school premises were made available. The incident involved a small group of participating students from outside and no students of GEMS International School were involved. We are concerned that the incident occurred on our premises. We are looking into the matter seriously, in coordination with the organisers, to understand the circumstances that led to it and to review how such situations can be better prevented in the future,” the statement said. The statement further said, “Since the event was held on a Sunday and was independently managed by an external entity, the operational arrangements, including event coordination and security, were handled by the organisers. However, as an educational institution, we remain committed to providing a safe, respectful and constructive environment for all children and young people who come onto our campus. We regret that an event meant to encourage dialogue, leadership and global citizenship was disrupted in this manner. We will continue to strengthen our protocols for any external events hosted on our premises.”
