Students in Samuhi Bhatpurwa village in Ghatampur tehsil of Kanpur staged a protest on Saturday, demanding a new primary school building

Kanpur: Students of a primary school in Samuhi Bhatpurwa village of Ghatampur tehsil staged a protest on Saturday, demanding construction of a new school building after part of the existing structure was demolished.The students refused to enter the school and raised slogans outside the premises for nearly four hours. They later returned home after it started raining.The primary school building had been in a dilapidated condition. In 2023, a girl was injured after a portion of the structure collapsed. Following approval, the department demolished the unsafe portion and auctioned the debris. Since then, classes have been conducted in only two rooms, while the anganwadi centre associated with the school has been operating from a private house.The school currently has 122 students, with head teacher Priyanka Tiwari, two assistant teachers and two shikshamitras posted there.After receiving information about the protest, BEO Deepak Awasthi reached the school and collected details from villagers and teachers.Awasthi said funds for construction of the new school building had already been approved by the Centre, while state-level approval was awaited. Once the approval was received, the necessary process would be completed and construction was expected to begin within about a month, he said.
