Mangaluru: A student among the 159 college students screened for drug consumption during surprise checks at Kotekar-Beeri and Konaje on Tuesday tested positive, said city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH.The drive was conducted between 4.30pm and 6pm by the assistant commissioners of police of the South and Central subdivisions under the supervision of the deputy commissioner of police (law and order). Police stopped private and college buses operating on the two routes and screened students using multi-drug testing kits.At Kotekar-Beeri in Ullal police station limits, 72 students from various colleges were tested. Of them, 71 tested negative and one tested positive. In Konaje police limits, police stopped two buses belonging a college near a community hall and tested 87 students. All of them tested negative.Reddy said the results were encouraging as the proportion of students testing positive had declined. However, sustained efforts were required to curb drug consumption, he added. The student who tested positive will be sent for counselling after the completion of legal formalities. Police will also conduct a follow-up, the commissioner said.
