Chennai: DMK president M K Stalin has urged Tamil Nadu govt to appeal against Supreme Court verdict that there was no need to provide reservation under the BC(M) category to backward-class people who convert to Islam. In a statement on X on Thursday, Stalin said the SC verdict was against social justice. “TN govt must immediately file a review petition challenging this and uphold the reservation rights of people from backward communities who embrace Islam,” he said. He said social backwardness does not arise in a day or within a single generation. “It is the result of social structures that have persisted for thousands of years. It does not disappear merely because a person changes their religion.”Stalin said that during the previous DMK govt, a resolution was passed urging the Union govt to amend the Constitution to extend reservation benefits to Adi Dravidars who convert to Christianity. The TVK govt must continue to pursue these efforts, he said.
