Times News NetworkKanpur: Candidates who arrived in Kanpur on Monday to appear in the SSC GD examination faced chaos after three times more candidates than the centre’s capacity were called, leading to a commotion and protests on the streets.The examination was cancelled amid chaos at Shrimati Ramkali Iqbal Bahadur Online Centre located at Purwamir in the Maharajpur police station area.The incident occurred during the second shift of the SSC GD examination. The centre had a capacity of 399 seats, but 819 candidates were called for the examination. As soon as information about the disorder and the candidates’ uproar was received, the police force reached the spot.On Monday, the Staff Selection Commission was scheduled to conduct the SSC GD examination in two shifts. The first shift was scheduled from 2 pm to 3 pm and the second shift from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. The centre’s capacity in a shift was 399. However, 819 candidates arrived for the first shift examination.After verification at the centre, 350 candidates were seated. As their numbers increased further, disorder began and candidates created a ruckus. The centre in-charge calmed everyone down and conducted a count, after which the total number of candidates, including those seated inside and those standing outside with admit cards, came to 819.In this matter, DCP (East) Satyajit Gupta said, “Misleading information about disturbances and unrest regarding the SSC GD Constable Recruitment Examination held on Monday is being circulated on social media. No such incident took place at the spot.”The DCP further said the examination was to be conducted in two shifts and the concerned college management indicated the examination centre’s capacity as approximately 399 candidates per shift, whereas admit cards for approximately 819 candidates per shift were issued. Due to the arrival of a large number of candidates, a situation of disorder and inconvenience arose in the conduct of the examination.A considerable number of candidates came from distant districts and had to wait, which caused resentment among them. On receiving information, local police and administrative officials reached the spot and held talks with the candidates to pacify them.After discussions with senior SSC officials and the examination conducting agency, both shifts of the examination scheduled on Monday were cancelled. Candidates were informed that the new date of the examination would be communicated to them via e-mail and the official website.Candidates also raised the issue of travel expenses incurred, and it was stated that necessary correspondence would be done after informing the concerned officials. The situation was completely peaceful and law and order was normal.
