Prayagraj: Bed capacity in the gynaecology and psychiatry departments of Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital is set to increase, with the state govt approving a budget of Rs 5.5 crore for expansion works. The move is expected to ease pressure on existing facilities and improve patient care.At present, psychiatric patients at the hospital are admitted to a night shelter due to a lack of dedicated ward space, causing inconvenience to both patients and attendants. To address this, a new 30-bed ward will be constructed above the existing psychiatry department at a cost of nearly Rs 3 crore. Officials said the new facility will provide better treatment conditions and a more structured environment for mental health patients. Similarly, the gynaecology department will get a 20-bed ward, to be built at a cost of approximately Rs 2.5 crore. In a related development, Motilal Nehru Medical College is also setting up a correspondence counter for postgraduate and undergraduate students at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is designated as the executing agency for the projects. Dr Man Singh of Motilal Nehru Medical College said new wards with 30 beds in psychiatry and 20 beds in gynaecology are being developed, and the correspondence counter for students is also under construction. The executing agency is formally appointed for all projects. Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, media in-charge of SRN Hospital, said the expansion will significantly strengthen infrastructure and improve patient management in both departments.
