Prayagraj: Doctors at Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital (SRNH) have successfully performed the first-ever kidney transplant in the district on Wednesday, offering new hope to patients who earlier had to travel to metros for such complex procedures. The three-hour surgery was carried out jointly by the urology and nephrology teams, who transplanted a kidney donated by a mother to her 21-year-old son. The recipient, Abhishek Singh, was battling severe kidney shrinkage for a long time. His father, Ashok Singh, a farmer from Hanumanganj Ramnathpur of Prayagraj, said the family spent lakhs of rupees seeking treatment from Delhi to Chandigarh, but doctors could not determine the exact cause of the aliment. Eventually, specialists advised that a kidney transplant was the only option. About six months ago, the family approached the nephrology OPD at SRN Hospital, where Dr Saumya Gupta evaluated the case and assured them that treatment could be undertaken locally. After multiple consultations and detailed medical examinations, Abhishek’s mother, Saroj, agreed to donate her kidney. All mandatory legal and medical formalities were completed before the transplant was scheduled. The surgery was declared successful, and Abhishek is now under close observation. MLNMC principal, Dr VK Pandey, described the achievement as a significant step in strengthening advanced medical services at the institution. The procedure was performed under the leadership of Dr Dilip Chaurasia (HOD, urology) and Dr Arvind Gupta (HOD, nephrology), along with Dr Shirish Mishra and their teams. “With this facility now available locally, patients will not have to travel to other cities,” said Dr Chaurasia. So far, seven other patients have applied for kidney transplant at the facility.
