Silchar: The Active Senior Citizens’ Forum has urged the CMs of Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur, along with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), to intervene urgently to restore the deteriorating national highways connecting Barak Valley with the rest of the northeast.Forum general secretary Dilip Kumar Dey submitted memoranda to the four CMs and the NHAI chairman on Wednesday, seeking immediate repairs and restoration. The forum referred to an earlier memorandum submitted to PM Narendra Modi, defence minister Rajnath Singh and the Union road transport and highways minister, highlighting the strategic importance of the highways passing through Barak Valley. The forum alleged that prolonged neglect had disrupted the movement of essential commodities, contributed to price rises and made travel and access to healthcare difficult for residents .Despite repeated representations to highway authorities, the concerns had not received adequate attention, it claimed.Copies of the memoranda were also sent to the Assam chief secretary and the Cachar district commissioner.
