Gurgaon: GMDA has invited fresh bids for the proposed 4.2-km elevated corridor between NH-8 and Vatika Chowk on Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), months after an earlier bid was withdrawn. The Rs 776-crore project is planned as the first phase of the SPR upgrade and is aimed at making the stretch signal-free and improving traffic movement. The elevated road will run along the existing carriageway, allowing through traffic to move above the surface road while local traffic uses the ground-level carriageway and service roads. The proposed corridor will have eight lanes, with three-lane primary surface roads on either side and two-lane secondary service roads. Ramps, loops and interchanges will be provided at key junctions to allow vehicles to enter and exit the corridor. An interchange at NH-8 will connect the corridor with the national highway.Officials said the design would be similar to the grade-separated access systems developed along Dwarka Expressway. The construction period will be 30 months, and work is expected to begin early next year after completion of the tender process.A Rs 755-crore tender for the project was floated in March but withdrawn in June after the bidding deadline was extended twice. Officials had cited administrative reasons for the withdrawal.“The earlier tender was withdrawn to make some changes in the documents. Govt approval has now been received and the project is moving ahead. The construction period will be 30 months and, after completing the tender formalities, we expect construction to begin early next year,” a GMDA official said. The project was reviewed by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini at a meeting on Friday. He directed officials to ensure that major infrastructure projects were taken up within timelines without compromising on quality.SPR is an important mobility corridor connecting Golf Course Extension Road, Sohna Road, Dwarka Expressway and the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. Rapid development along the corridor has increased traffic, with congestion frequently building up at major intersections. The wider SPR upgrade is planned in phases. An interchange at Vatika Chowk is proposed under Phase II to improve connectivity between SPR and the Sohna elevated corridor. Phase III proposes an 8.5-km elevated corridor between Vatika Chowk and Ghata. Detailed project reports for both phases are under preparation.Together, the planned works are aimed at improving connectivity between the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and Dwarka Expressway and reducing traffic conflicts at major junctions. The CM also reviewed the proposed 2.2-km elevated corridor between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bharadwaj Chowk. The project was earlier being executed by NHAI as a deposit work on behalf of GMDA. It has now been decided that GMDA will undertake the construction.A GMDA official said the authority would soon engage a consultant to prepare a detailed project report. The six-lane elevated corridor will have service roads and is proposed to be completed within 24 months of commencement of construction. NHAI is undertaking utility shifting for the project.Plans for elevated corridors at identified locations in Old Gurgaon were also reviewed. The CM directed officials to expedite the Sheetla Mata Medical College and Hospital project, with civil works targeted for completion by Dec.The meeting also reviewed measures to strengthen Gurgaon’s drainage network. The CM directed officials to increase rainwater harvesting and called for large ponds and drainage infrastructure in green belts to improve rainwater storage, flood mitigation and groundwater recharge.
