NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar with SPPU students

Pune: Students of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Sunday raised several issues, including inadequate facilities, low stipends under Earn and Learn Scheme and poor healthcare services on campus, in their talks with MLA Rohit Pawar during his visit to the campus.Pawar visited them after attending a gathering organised by students following the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He heard their grievances outside Jayakar Library and assured them that their concerns would be taken up.Students said the university was facing a severe shortage of hostel accommodation, forcing many to struggle with expensive private housing.“The amount we receive under Earn and Learn scheme is not enough to cover two meals a day.

The enhanced stipend has still not been implemented,” students told Pawar, urging him to push for an increase in the honorarium and better facilities under the scheme.Students criticised the services at the university’s health centre. They alleged that the same medicine was prescribed for most illnesses and claimed that students seeking treatment in the evening were charged.Research scholars highlighted disparities in fellowship amounts under the state-backed BARTI, SARTHI and Mahajyoti schemes, demanding that govt bring greater parity.Pawar also commented on changes in the stenographer recruitment process, alleged corruption in road works and irregularities in recruitment at the Ahmednagar District Central Cooperative Bank.
