Vasco: Five stray cattle were mowed down by a speeding cargo truck late on Friday at the Verna industrial estate. Police arrested the driver, Shah Mohamad Ansari, a native of Mumbai, who, according to the police, was drunk at the time of the accident.The police said that the accident took place at around 11.30pm, near Ravi Cafe, opposite AMI Industries, IDC Verna. Ansari drove the cargo truck that had Maharashtra registration no, in a reckless and negligent manner, while heading towards AII Cargo Ghati Ltd at IDC Verna, killing the stray cattle on the way. Ansari has been booked under the provisions of BNS and Motor Vehicles Act.The investigation is in progress under the supervision of police inspector Anand Shirodkar.Dileshwar Naik, panch of Nagoa panchayat, said, “The panchayat has taken steps to control the movement of stray cattle on roads. We have impounded several of them but there are too many. We have now identified a location to construct a cow shed,” He also added that the panchayat has a team to handle the issue.Naik told TOI that while impounding cattle is the need of the hour, cattle owners must also act responsilbly. “Cattle on roads are the cause of accidents, especially during the night,” he said.
