Margao: In the wake of a dengue scare that saw two policemen test positive for the vector-borne disease, the South Goa police cleared out a pile of seized vehicles and discarded items lying around the district police headquarters here within a single day, prompting PWD minister Digambar Kamat to hold it up as a model of administrative efficiency — even as he issued a stern warning to officials against needlessly delaying public work.Kamat, who visited the South Goa police headquarters on Thursday following reports of dengue cases, said he had issued a final and firm warning to officials in the habit of shuttling files and complaints from desk to desk. “Such practices will no longer be tolerated, and strict action will follow against anyone found repeating them,” he said, adding that he would seek disciplinary proceedings against any officer found doing so in the future.Recounting his visit to the police headquarters, Kamat said he had found several motorcycles dumped on the premises, posing a health hazard amid the dengue scare. The additional collector, who was present at the time, suggested that the vehicles be shifted to a spot near Sonsoddo. The police, he said, acted without delay.“By 11 pm, I was informed that all the bikes had been shifted out of the district police headquarters premises,” Kamat said. “I witnessed how fast the administration can work when it wants to. They cleared out all the motorcycles in a single day — otherwise, a lot of time would have been lost over notes going back and forth.”The Margao MLA said ordinary citizens should not be made to suffer or run from pillar to post over small, genuine issues. “Good governance means providing relief to the common man,” he told reporters on Friday during his visit to the Margao municipality for hearing public grievances. “Come election time, one of the factors that decides a govt’s fate is exactly this — how many trips people had to make to the municipality or the collectorate. That is how people judge whether a govt has delivered good governance or not.”
