Chandigarh: The Sonipat police have successfully busted an inter-state extortion gang, and arrested five accused linked to the case. During the investigation, it was revealed that due to the ‘Abhedya’ app, the use of international numbers was significantly restricted, forcing criminals to rely on local mobile numbers. As soon as these local numbers became active, the police’s technical team was alerted. Acting swiftly, the team conducted an operation in the Bahalgarh area and apprehended the accused. All the arrested individuals are residents of the Narela area in Delhi.Network Spread Across Multiple StatesPreliminary investigation indicates that the gang operated across Delhi, Haryana, and several other states, targeting individuals for extortion. The accused have confessed to demanding ransom from a nutritionist in Sonipat. It has also come to light during interrogation that the gang members were planning to execute firing incidents in different districts to establish dominance and extort money.Weapons and Mobile Phones Recovered; Probe ContinuesThe police have recovered illegal weapons, three mobile phones, and two live cartridges from the possession of the accused. The seized items were being used for criminal activities. Intensive interrogation of the accused is currently underway, and efforts are being made to identify other members of the gang and unravel their wider network.Impact of ‘Abhedya’ App; Other States Show InterestWith the effective implementation of the ‘Abhedya’ app, there has been a significant reduction in suspicious calls from foreign numbers, making it easier for law enforcement agencies to track criminals.
