Gorakhpur: In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old man allegedly hacked his father to death with an axe while he was asleep outside their home in the early hours of Thursday.The incident took place in Jungle Ayodhya Prasad village in Gorakhpur.According to police, the victim, Brahmadev Kannaujia, 55, had gone to sleep on a cot outside his house after dinner on Wednesday night. Between 2 am and 2.30 am, his younger son, Golu Kannaujia, allegedly picked up an axe and attacked him repeatedly.Police said the accused struck his father seven to eight times on the head and neck, causing fatal injuries and leading to his death on the spot.Family members and neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing screams and commotion.Villagers said the accused, the younger of two brothers, had been under stress after a woman he was reportedly in a relationship with married someone else. They also claimed his behaviour had become increasingly unusual in recent years.Family members told police that Golu had been suffering from a mental illness for the past seven to eight years and was undergoing treatment. The death of his mother around six months ago had further affected his condition, they said.Circle officer, Ravi Kumar Singh, said the exact reason behind the murder remains unclear.“The accused is in custody. We are examining all possible angles, including family disputes, his mental health condition and other circumstances,” he said.The body has been sent for post-mortem.
