Gurgaon: Haryana govt will install solar power systems in 130 senior secondary govt schools in the city over the next two years as part of its push towards clean energy adoption and sustainable public infrastructure.
The initiative is part of a broader school infrastructure development programme under which more than Rs 700 crore has been earmarked across the state. Education department officials said the project aims to reduce dependence on conventional sources of electricity, lower operational costs and move schools towards energy self-sufficiency.
Assistant project coordinator Satya Narayan Yadav said instructions have been received from the state govt to install solar energy systems in all senior secondary govt schools. “The initiative reflects the govt’s commitment to renewable energy adoption and environmental sustainability in the education sector,” he said.
Officials said the drive will enable schools to generate a significant share of their electricity requirements while also serving as practical learning models for students on sustainable development. The move is expected to reduce electricity expenditure, allowing schools to utilise resources for educational and student welfare activities.
The solar power project will be implemented alongside other sustainability measures, including zero-waste management, water conservation, recycling and plantation drives aimed at creating environmentally sustainable campuses. The programme is being rolled out alongside ongoing infrastructure upgrades in govt schools. Funds have been allocated for the construction and repair of classrooms, boundary walls, toilets and ramps.
The school solarisation plan forms part of Haryana’s larger strategy to convert all govt buildings, autonomous educational institutions and registered gaushalas into solar-powered premises by 2026-27.
A survey of 4,523 govt buildings conducted by the state identified a cumulative solar power potential of 122 MW. “The mandate requires all state-run schools, colleges, hospitals and administrative offices to transition to solar power,” a senior govt official said.
The state plans to undertake the solarisation drive using its own resources without relying on central financial assistance.
As of early 2026, Haryana’s total power requirement stood at around 15,076 MW, of which 6,264 MW was being met through renewable sources, including 2,513 MW of solar energy.
The state is also pursuing a target of 2.22 lakh rooftop solar installations under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana by March 31, 2027. Around 60,000 households had completed installations by March 2026. Haryana aims to achieve a cumulative rooftop solar capacity of 1.6 GW by 2030, officials said.
