Kolkata: In a step towards strengthening liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure in eastern India, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), signed a license agreement with East Horizon Pvt Ltd on March 6 for the establishment of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at Haldia Dock Complex (HDC).The project, entailing an investment of approximately Rs 260 crore, is expected to enhance the port’s capability in handling LNG and facilitate the development of cleaner energy infrastructure in the region. The proposed FSRU facility will enable import, storage and regasification of LNG, thereby strengthening the national gas supply chain and supporting the govt of India’s vision of increasing the share of natural gas in the country’s energy mix.The initiative also aligns with the broader objective of promoting port-led industrialisation and economic development in the region.SMPK chairman Rathendra Raman said the establishment of the FSRU at Haldia Dock Complex marks an important step towards enhancing LNG infrastructure in eastern India. “The project will facilitate greater adoption of cleaner fuels, strengthen energy security and further reinforce SMPK’s role in supporting sustainable industrial growth in the region,” he said.
