Surat: Deputy municipal commissioner of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), Swati Desai, submitted her resignation to municipal commissioner Nagrajan M on Wednesday. Her resignation is currently under consideration and has not yet been approved. The sudden move by the young officer has triggered speculation within the civic body, especially as several officers have resigned before completing their tenure in recent years.Desai is in charge of key departments, including accounts and Smart City development, and also serves as the zonal head of the Udhna zone. Under her supervision, the civic body’s budget was recently prepared and presented by the municipal commissioner and the standing committee chairman.During her two-decade-long career with the SMC, Desai rose through the ranks, joining as a clerk and later qualifying as a company secretary while in service. She also completed her MCom and MBA. After 10 years in clerical service, she was appointed secretary in 2017 and subsequently selected as deputy municipal commissioner. In her resignation letter, Desai cited health and personal reasons. “My two children are young, and I need to devote more time to them. That is the primary reason behind my decision,” she told TOI.“I have received Desai’s resignation, and it is under consideration. A final decision will be taken after due procedure,” said Nagrajan.
