Nagpur: The board of Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL), chaired by municipal commissioner and chief executive officer Vipin Itankar, on Friday approved a proposal to undertake a preliminary survey for the alignment of interception and diversion (I&D) lines under the ambitious Rs1,927 crore Nag River Pollution Abatement Project. The survey will map the proposed alignment of interceptor sewers and identify structures, private properties, and other obstacles likely to be affected before execution of the project. Officials said the exercise will help determine the extent of land required, the number of affected properties and the rehabilitation measures, if any, needed before the project moves to the tendering stage.According to senior NSSCDCL officials, the alignment has already been conceptually finalised by the project’s consultant, Tata Consulting Engineers. However, a detailed ground survey is now required to verify the route, identify encroachments, and assess practical challenges along the proposed corridor. The survey will be carried out by NSSCDCL’s in-house Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) team over the next two to three months. Officials clarified that the survey would focus only on the stretches where interception and diversion infrastructure are proposed and not the entire sewer network. The exercise will cover alignments along the Nag River, Pili River, and Bor Nala, where interceptor sewers will divert sewage to treatment plants instead of allowing it to flow into the rivers.Once the survey is completed, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will finalise the project alignment, prepare rehabilitation proposals as per need, and proceed with inviting tenders for execution. The interception and diversion component forms the largest civil package of the National River Conservation Plan. Package-1 alone is estimated to cost about Rs412 crore, including construction of 107 diversion manholes (Rs3.29 crore), 14.11km of connecting sewers (Rs37.86 crore), 48.78km of interceptor sewers along the Nag River, Pili River and Bor Nala (Rs308.83 crore), four pumping stations and rehabilitation of two existing stations (Rs18.57 crore), 12.5km of rising mains (Rs36.52 crore), solar power installations (Rs0.75 crore) and procurement of sewer cleaning machinery (Rs5.90 crore).Officials said the preliminary survey is a crucial first step towards implementing one of Nagpur’s biggest river rejuvenation projects aimed at preventing untreated sewage from entering the city’s rivers.
