Srinagar, Oct 20: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested six alleged drug peddlers and recovered charas, cannabis and heroin in separate operations across Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag districts, officials said on Tuesday.
In Shopian, a police team from Heerpora Police Station intercepted an Alto car during routine checking at Circuit House. Two occupants, identified as Mashooq Ahmad Hajam and Bilal Ahmad Hajam, both residents of Sedow in Heerpora, were allegedly found in possession of 60 grams of charas-like substance each.
Police registered FIR No. 115/2026 at Police Station Heerpora and initiated an investigation to establish the source of the contraband and trace its supply links.
In Kulgam, a police team from Mir Bazar Police Post intercepted an auto-rickshaw near Lalipora Crossing on NH-244 during naka checking. Police said 860 grams of cannabis-like substance and 12.05 grams of charas were recovered from a polythene bag inside the driver’s cabin.
The driver, identified as Fazil Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Kapran, Verinag, Anantnag, was taken into custody. A case under Sections 8/20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered at Qazigund Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
In Anantnag, police from Kokernag Police Station apprehended Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, a resident of Panzgam, Kokernag, during patrolling at Soaf Shali. Approximately 119 grams of charas powder-like substance were allegedly recovered from his possession. Police registered FIR No. 175/2026 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act.
In a separate operation, police from Dooru Police Station apprehended Adil Ahmed Wani of Malikpora and Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh of Verinag. Police said approximately seven grams and eight grams of heroin, respectively, were recovered during their personal searches. Cases have been registered under relevant legal provisions, and investigations are in progress.
Police reiterated their commitment to combating drug trafficking and appealed to the public to share information about drug peddling and related activities to help curb the menace.
