Bengaluru: A 21-year-old animal activist from the city filed a criminal case against two owners of a private pet care centre, accusing them of causing the deaths of six dogs that she had handed them last month. The complainant, P Chandrakala of JP Nagar 3rd phase, registered an FIR with Hulimavu police, accusing Manjunath and Naveen Gowda from ‘Bhairava Kennel and Pet Care’ in Gottigere of ill-treating her dogs and causing their untimely deaths. According to Chandrakala, she had handed over 10 dogs, including six street dogs on Sept 3 this year.“I was looking after the 10 dogs in my home. Since we had to shift out, I decided to hand them to Bhairava Kennel and Pet Care temporarily. Among the 10 dogs, we had a German Shepherd, Shih Tzu and a Boxer. We paid around Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000. However, Naveen and Manjunath never allowed us to visit the kennel in the due course. They would dodge us saying they were not present in the kennel. Around two weeks back, they called us stating five of our dogs died suddenly,” Chandrakala said, adding that the two did not detail the reason. When Chandrakala visited the kennel, she saw the remaining five dogs had gone weak, she said.Meanwhile, last Saturday, Manjunath and Naveen called, saying the German Shepherd died in the kennel, totalling the deaths at six. “Then, I went and brought back the remaining dogs. I approached the Hulimavu police for a complaint. Initially, they did not accept the complaint and we all protested outside the station Tuesday evening. Then, the complaint was accepted,” she said.A senior officer said they have issued notices to Manjunath and Naveen. “Also, we will be taking officials from the animal husbandry department with us for a spot mahazar,” he said. The kennel owners are yet to issue a statement.
