Dibrugarh: Sivasagar district police have significantly intensified surveillance along the Assam-Nagaland interstate border to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.With the Assam assembly elections fast approaching, security forces are leaving no stone unturned to seal off potential transit routes for illegal activities.
On Tuesday, Sivasagar SSP Papori Chetia conducted a high-level field inspection of the border outposts (BOPs) situated in the sensitive forest and hilly terrains along the interstate boundary. The SSP navigated the difficult terrain on foot to personally review vulnerable routes that could be exploited for the smuggling of illicit liquor, cash or arms — factors that often threaten the integrity of the polling process.The inspection is particularly critical for the Nazira assembly constituency, one of the three seats in the district alongside Sivasagar and Demow. Nazira shares a porous boundary with Nagaland, making it a focal point for security agencies. During her visit, SSP Chetia interacted closely with the personnel stationed at these remote outposts, assessing their operational readiness and the logistical challenges of guarding the border during the election cycle.“Our primary objective is to maintain an airtight security blanket along the interstate border to prevent any external interference in the democratic process. The morale of our personnel is high, and we have instructed all outposts to maintain 24/7 vigilance on both traditional and unconventional routes. We are committed to providing a safe environment for every voter,” the SSP said.As Assam prepares to head to the polls on Apr 9, the coordination between the border outposts and district headquarters is being streamlined to allow real-time intelligence sharing.With the Model Code of Conduct in full force, the Sivasagar police have also established additional check-gates and mobile patrolling units across the district. The emphasis remains on “zero tolerance” toward any movement that could influence the three crucial seats of Sivasagar, Demow and Nazira.
