Dibrugarh: In a step toward bridging the gap between theoretical training and ground-level policing, Sivasagar police on Thursday hosted an engaging interactive session with probationary deputy superintendents of police (DSPs), who were on a field exposure visit to the district.The session provided the newly inducted officers with valuable insights into real-world policing practices, operational challenges and key district-level initiatives.The interaction was led by Sivasagar SSP Subhashish Baruah, along with other senior police officials of the district. The probationary DSPs, who have joined the Assam Police Service (APS) after clearing the competitive Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) exams, were given an in-depth overview of how policing functions at the district level — from law enforcement strategies to community outreach efforts.“Field exposure is an indispensable component for an officer’s development. Understanding the realities of policing on the ground is what truly prepares them for the responsibilities ahead. We shared our experiences, the challenges we face in Sivasagar and the initiatives we have undertaken to ensure public safety and community trust. Hearing directly from experienced officers about the complexities of field policing gives them a clearer picture of what to expect and how to respond effectively,” SSP Subhashish Baruah said at the end of the session.The Assam Police DSP (Probationary) training is a comprehensive programme lasting approximately 52 weeks. The Basic Training Course is typically conducted at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA), Meghalaya or the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy (LBPA) in Dergaon, preceded by a brief induction at the Assam Administrative Staff College. The training is structured around intensive indoor modules covering subjects such as law and forensic science, and outdoor modules focusing on physical conditioning and weapons handling, collectively aimed at preparing officers for the demands of active field duty.The field exposure visits form a critical part of this training framework, allowing probationary officers to observe and engage with functioning police systems across different districts of Assam.
