Dibrugarh: Sivasagar district commissioner Mridul Yadav on Friday visited Nanglamoraghat and other vulnerable areas along the Disang to conduct a field inspection as rising water levels in the Disang and Dikhow rivers triggered a severe flood situation in the district.During the inspection, Yadav assessed the overall ground situation and issued necessary departmental instructions to the concerned agencies. Additional district commissioner and chief executive officer of the district disaster management authority, Meenakshi Permey, was also present during the visit.The visit came a day after the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued a flood alert on June 18, warning that the water level of the Disang river at Nanglamoraghat in Sivasagar continued to rise, resulting in a severe flood situation. The ASDMA advised citizens to stay away from the river and low-lying areas, avoid unnecessary movement near embankments, and follow official advisories issued by the authorities.“We are closely monitoring the situation along both rivers. All concerned departments have been put on alert, and necessary instructions have been issued to ensure the safety of residents in vulnerable areas,” DC Yadav said.The flood situation in Sivasagar has been steadily worsening since the monsoon arrived in Assam on June 7, with the water levels of both the Disang and Dikhow rivers rising continuously in the weeks since. Nanglamoraghat and several other low-lying areas adjacent to the Disang river have emerged as particularly vulnerable zones.“The administration is fully prepared to respond to any deterioration in the situation. Residents in low-lying and riverside areas should remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities,” Yadav added.Officials said the district administration is in close coordination with state agencies and is monitoring river levels round the clock. Embankments along the Disang and Dikhow are under watch, and steps are being taken to ensure prompt response in the event of any breach or further rise in water levels. Authorities have also advised people to avoid unnecessary travel to riverside areas until the situation stabilises.Assam typically witnesses widespread flooding during the monsoon months, with rivers in the Brahmaputra basin and its tributaries frequently breaching danger levels. Sivasagar district, situated along several of these river systems, remains one of the most vulnerable areas during the flood season, and the administration has been taking precautionary measures to mitigate any potential worsening of the current situation.
