Kolkata, The sit-in by SFI at Presidency University over the demands for the varsity’s own entrance tests and students’ union elections entered the fourth day on Friday.
The students’ wing of the CPI(M) vowed to continue the stir till their demands are met by the university authorities.
“We will not leave the Presidency portico (the venue of protest) till the authorities come up with an assurance that the admission process should be based on the university’s own entrance tests and the guidelines in this regard will be notified,” Ushashree Mitra, a spokesperson of SFI, said.
As of now, the Presidency University’s undergraduate and postgraduate entrance tests are conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEEB).
Around 50 students were participating in the protest, amid the heat and humidity.
The agitating students also demanded immediate elections to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and the students’ union.
“We want ICC and students’ union elections to be conducted without delay and in a democratic manner,” a protester said.
The protesting students also raised concerns over the implementation of the National Education Policy and called for clarity on course structures and bridge courses.
A university official said talks were on with the students regarding their demands, but they must appreciate that some of these demands cannot be addressed overnight until a mechanism is found.
