Jamshedpur: Issuing of birth and death certificates at the city’s three urban local bodies has been disrupted for nearly a week after civic officials and computer operators were diverted to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) work, leaving residents struggling to complete Aadhaar updates, insurance claims and other time-bound formalities.Mango Municipal Corporation (MMC), Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Jugsalai Municipal Council (JMC) temporarily suspended operations at their certificate counters after employees were assigned electoral roll revision duties from Aug 23. The diversion has resulted in a mounting backlog of applications.The counters are expected to resume operations from Monday following intervention by senior civic officials.“I have urged senior officials to relieve the computer operators from SIR duties. The birth and death certificate counter will remain open from Monday,” JNAC municipal commissioner Yogendra Prasad said.At MMC, additional municipal commissioner Jitendra Yadav has directed personnel handling certificates to report to the counter after completing their SIR assignments.“SIR work is completed by 2 pm. The personnel concerned will attend the birth and death certificate counter thereafter on weekdays,” an MMC city manager said. Yadav could not be reached for comment. The official added that instructions had been issued to ensure the counter remained operational without fail.The disruption has forced applicants to make repeated trips to municipal offices, with some fearing delays in important official procedures. “I need my father’s death certificate for submission to the life insurance office. I hope the service resumes on Monday,” said Vijay Pradhan, a Kadma resident.Officials said JNAC and MMC together receive more than 100 birth and death certificate applications daily, of which around 70 to 80 are usually processed. Jugsalai receives fewer than half the combined applications handled by the other two civic bodies. Clearing the accumulated backlog could take several days after the counters reopen.
