Guwahati: Following an 18-month closure, housing and urban affairs minister Kaushik Rai on Monday inaugurated the newly renovated Silpukhuri Park.Spread over four bighas, the park was renovated by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) at a cost of ₹98 lakh. The upgrade includes new internal pathways, improved drainage, modern play areas for children, a decorative fountain, new benches, a ticket counter and improved sanitary facilities.“By renewing this park, the govt highlights its commitment to urban sustainability, nature conservation and public wellness,” said Rai.Entry to the park is free from 5:30 am to 10 am for all visitors. For the rest of the day, entry is free for people above 60 years of age. Rai said he expects the park to emerge as a preferred recreational destination for children, families and morning walkers and appealed to citizens to help maintain cleanliness and protect public property.The park provides walking and play space for senior citizens and children. Rai noted that the bottom of the pond remains concretised and urged the GMDA to dewater the pond and remove the concrete to restore its natural ecosystem.Rai said parks are essential for city greenery and for future generations and the elderly. “To create space for public parks and recreational facilities, the govt plans to relocate all directorate offices,” said Rai. He added that similar parks are planned not only in Guwahati but across Assam.
