Varanasi: Sub-inspector Mayank Krishna Upadhyay, posted at Nizamabad police station in Azamgarh, was suspended on Sunday after a hidden-camera video purportedly showing him demanding Rs 2,500 as a bribe to clear a passport verification report went viral on social media. Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar also ordered departmental action against him.The SP said that prima facie allegations had surfaced against the sub-inspector regarding an indirect demand for illegal gratification during an inquiry related to passport verification. Serious charges of gross negligence in official duties, indiscipline, arbitrariness and inefficiency have also been levelled against him.Considering the matter a serious case of indiscipline, the SP ordered his suspension. He said maintaining discipline, transparency and accountability in the police department was a priority. Any negligence or irregularity in work related to the public would not be tolerated.
