Panaji: The Bombay high court on Wednesday adjourned to July 21 the hearing on a plea related to the removal of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj erected on Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) land, and orally asked Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar and four residents to suggest alternative sites for shifting the statue. The four residents, who were denied relief by Supreme Court when they challenged the HC order, told the court that the spot where the statue was installed had been used as a dump yard for over 30 years. They said they helped clean the area and are seeking a modification of it’s direction to remove the statue.Earlier this month, Supreme Court refused to interfere with the high court’s April 7 order directing the statue’s removal, and dismissed the petition as withdrawn while granting liberty to file an appropriate application before the high court seeking a variation of its order. On April 7, the high court had also directed the South Goa SP to oversee security arrangements for the removal of the structure.
