Jaipur: A road cave-in near Shikariyon Ki Mori on Ghoda Nikas Road in the Walled City has left residents worried about the safety of their homes. The situation worsened Sunday when a wall of one of the houses that had been issued an evacuation notice collapsed. No one was hurt as the house had already been vacated. However, residents said no Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) team reached the spot after the wall collapsed. A security guard deployed by the civic body was the only JMC representative present there.A large pothole had appeared around 10 days ago in the area, following which JMC filled it with around 500 sandbags. However, heavy rain two days ago washed away the soil, making the hole even larger. The civic body had to send more sandbags to the spot, but residents say the problem is unresolved.According to locals, around 1,000 sandbags have now been placed, but rainwater continues to wash away the soil, which has accumulated in an old well near Mahadev temple. Residents also claim that cracks have appeared in around 10-15 houses as the road continues to sink.The civic body has issued evacuation notices to several households. Two houses were evacuated two days ago, followed by notices to three-four more homes.Former councillor Mohammad Zakariya said, “The surprising thing is that there is no illegal construction here. Four houses have been issued evacuation notices in the past two days. But if the actual problem is not identified, the entire neighbourhood will eventually have to be evacuated. There is a drainage problem here, there is no proper system for water disposal and the road is sinking. Where are people supposed to go?”He said the civic body should identify the source of the problem and stop the erosion instead of simply asking residents to vacate their homes. He also demanded a permanent repair rather than repeatedly filling the depression with sandbags.Local resident Iqbal said, “We have also received a notice. But the problem is, where will we go? If our house is damaged, where will we live after all this?”Another resident, Abram Qureshi, said, “Two houses received notices two days ago and we shifted to our relatives’ homes. But after the recent rain, cracks have appeared in three more houses. How many people will have to leave? Waterlogging happens here every year, but this time the problem has reached our homes. If we have no roof over our heads, how will we survive?”Residents said the road has been sinking for some time, affecting the foundation of nearby houses.
