Nagpur: More than 100 residents of Jai Prabhu Niwas, Popular and Shilpa societies in Manish Nagar gathered on Sunday to demand urgent action over sewage overflow that has left large parts of the locality reeking for months.Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials said temporary measures would address the immediate problem within two weeks, though the broader sewage project, including a planned Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), will take about a year to complete.Residents said the old sewer line running through the area is choked and overflowing, raising concerns that stagnant sewage could breed mosquitoes and cause health problems.“Sewage has piled up around our homes. The stench, mosquito breeding and unhygienic conditions pose a serious health risk. If residents fall ill because of this, who will take responsibility?” a resident asked.Local resident Ranjeet Rathod said NMC had laid a new sewage line about a year ago but had not yet provided household connections. “Despite several complaints — both online and in person — nothing has been resolved. We’ve also approached the local corporator, but there has been no action,” he said.NMC superintending engineer Shweta Banerjee said household connections to the new line had not yet been provided as the project remained incomplete. “The plan is to link the line to the planned STP, and the entire project is expected to be completed by June 2027. But the current problem in these societies stems from residents illegally joining the under-construction pipeline, which is causing it to overflow,” she said.Banerjee added that stopgap measures were being planned. “We need to clean the pipeline and connect it to a nearby nullah to stop the overflow. That work will take about 15 days, and clearing the blockage will begin immediately,” she said, adding that public health and sanitation remained a top priority.
