Times News NetworkKanpur: The severed hand of an ITBP soldier’s mother was sent to the pathology department of GSVM medical college for examination after specialists were unavailable in the forensic department, officials said.The limb was initially preserved in the forensic department after the college received a letter from the chief medical officer (CMO), but it was later transferred for pathological examination due to the lack of specialists. The college administration constituted a special team of senior doctors to conduct a microscopic examination of the tissue. The objective was to determine the causes of infection and the actual reason for tissue damage so that a scientific report of the entire case could be prepared.According to head of the pathology department Prof. Lubna Khan, the severed hand was several days old, making the condition of the tissue extremely critical. The histopathological examination involved a microscopic study of the tissues, which would help determine the cause of the spread of infection and whether any disease or other medical condition played a role. The department believed the tissues might have changed due to the passage of time, and therefore the examination was to be conducted under the supervision of experienced doctors. Acting principal Prof. Richa Giri stated that this decision was taken due to the unavailability of forensic facilities.The matter is related to Nirmala Devi, mother of Vikas Singh, a soldier posted in the 32nd Battalion of ITBP. On May 13, she was admitted to a private hospital located at Tat Mill after experiencing difficulty in breathing. Following injections administered during treatment, swelling and infection in her left hand rapidly increased. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred on May 14 to another private hospital located at Bithoor, where doctors continuously treated her upon observing the severe infection. However, with no improvement in her condition, the doctors decided on May 17 to amputate her hand.Following the incident, questions were raised about how the infection spread so rapidly. The case was being investigated by the pathology department at GSVM medical college and the report was awaited. Family members also demanded an impartial investigation in the matter.
