Prayagraj: Sangam city continued to remain in the grip of an intense heatwave on Wednesday as scorching sunshine, hot winds and high humidity made life miserable for residents. The maximum temperature in Prayagraj touched 46.4 degrees Celsius (4.7 degrees above normal), making it the second hottest city in Uttar Pradesh after Banda, which recorded a blistering 47.8 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature settled at 28.6 degrees Celsius. The severe weather conditions became even more uncomfortable due to high moisture levels in the atmosphere. According to weather data, relative humidity ranged between 37% and 41%, causing profuse sweating and making the heat feel more oppressive. Residents complained that even short outdoor exposure left them exhausted.Adding to the woes, frequent disruptions in electricity supply in several localities forced people to endure unbearable conditions indoors as well. The ongoing spell of severe heat has gained further significance with the beginning of Nautapa, the nine-day period traditionally considered the hottest phase of summer.Roads and markets wore a deserted look during afternoon hours as people avoided unnecessary movement between noon and 4 pm. Those venturing outside were seen covering their faces with scarves and towels. Temporary roadside water kiosks and stalls selling cold beverages witnessed brisk crowds throughout the day.Doctors advised people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, remain hydrated and stay indoors as much as possible to prevent heat-related illnesses, as heatwave conditions are likely to persist for the next 24 hours, after which rain are likely to provide some relief.
