Ferozepur: In the second death from a water-borne disease-hit village, a youth from Ferozepur’s border area died during treatment at PGIMER, Chandigarh, on Thursday after falling ill during a visit to the Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB) dera in Amritsar district. The deceased, Arshdeep Singh of Hazara Singh Wala village, died due to multiple organ failure, doctors said, even as his family alleged jaundice as the cause.Notably, the Ferozepur village was in the news after the death of a 12-year-old girl, Sehaj Kaur, due to a leptospirosis outbreak on Feb 24.Talking to mediapersons, Arshdeep’s father, Kashmir Singh, said his son had fever before leaving for Beas and had visited the Civil Hospital for tests. However, the doctor on duty allegedly refused to take his blood sample, claiming leptospirosis affects only children. “After that, Arshdeep went to Beas, where his condition worsened. He started vomiting and remained unwell for a couple of days. While being brought back in a serious condition, he fainted on the way,” he said.Kashmir Singh said Arshdeep was first taken to the Civil Hospital in Ferozepur, from where he was referred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot. Doctors there further referred him to AIIMS Bathinda and later to PGIMER, Chandigarh.Jaundice cannot be confirmed as the cause of death until the patient’s medical records are examined, a senior health department official said, adding that the records are being sought.Meanwhile, villagers said tests were conducted and water tankers supplied after the outbreak, but alleged that the measures were short-lived. They claimed the village was later left to rely on the same contaminated water system, leading to a rise in water-borne diseases.MSID:: 129827336 413 |
