Prayagraj: The intense heatwave continued to grip the Sangam City on Monday as scorching winds and blazing sunshine made life difficult for residents. The maximum temperature was recorded at 45.4 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 29 degrees Celsius.Compared to Sunday, the day temperature witnessed a slight fall of 0.2 degrees Celsius as the maximum on Sunday was 45.6 degrees Celsius, while the night temperature remained unchanged at 29 degrees Celsius. Despite the marginal dip, the weather continued to remain extremely harsh. Rising night temperatures have also increased discomfort, making fans and coolers less effective.According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) report, Prayagraj remained the fifth hottest district in UP. Banda topped the list with 47.6 degrees Celsius, followed by Jhansi at 46 degrees, Orai at 45.8 degrees and Agra at 45.5 degrees Celsius.Hot winds started troubling from the morning itself. By afternoon, roads and markets wore a deserted look as people avoided stepping out. The conditions were such that movement remained minimal between noon and 4 pm, after which people were seen coming out in quite large numbers.The ongoing spell of severe heat has become more significant with the beginning of ‘Nautapa’, the nine-day period traditionally considered the hottest phase of summer. The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to continue till May 28.The scorching weather affected not only people but also stray animals and birds searching for water. In several areas, residents and social workers arranged water pots and containers for commuters as well as stray cattle, dogs and birds. Temporary roadside water kiosks were also seen providing relief to people battling the extreme heat.Doctors have advised residents to avoid direct sunlight during the afternoon, stay hydrated and remain indoors as much as possible to prevent heat-related illnesses.
