Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday inaugurated the Guwahati Science City at Sonapur on the city’s outskirts, positioning the new facility as a major push to expand science education in the state through a state-of-the-art edutainment hub.The Science City was developed jointly by Assam govt and National Council of Science Museums under the Govt of India.Built at a cost of Rs 288.13 crore, the campus spans around 250 bighas, making it larger than Kolkata’s Science City, which covers about 120 bighas. “Assam gets its own Science City and it will be one of the best in the country,” Sarma wrote on X.Two main sections — Eureka and Space Odyssey — have been completed, while Science Innovation and Science Park are set to be added soon. The complex is designed to offer interactive science learning experiences.Sarma also virtually inaugurated five district science centres at Amingaon, Majuli, Silchar, Kaliabor and Bongaigaon. The centres were built at a cost of about Rs 178.13 crore and include science galleries, a 64-seat digital planetarium and an auditorium.Sarma said the new facilities would help strengthen scientific and technological learning in Assam. Recalling a childhood visit to the science museum in Kolkata, he said the experience inspired him to dream of building a world-class science centre in Guwahati.“Area-wise, our Science City is bigger than Kolkata Science City. Among all projects that our govt undertook for the new generation, this Science City is leading and most attractive,” Sarma said.
