Daryapur (Amravati): In an irony hard to miss, Bhamod village in Daryapur taluka does not have its own gram panchayat office. The entire administration of this group gram panchayat, which covers Bhamod and Mhaispur, is being run from a single classroom of a local ZP school built under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. Officials and villagers say this may be the only gram panchayat in Maharashtra operating without an official building.What makes it more shocking is the village’s political legacy. After the formation of Maharashtra in 1960, DZ Palaspagar, a resident of Bhamod, was a cabinet minister in the first ministry headed by the late Yashwantrao Chavan. Six decades later, his village is forced to run its panchayat from a borrowed room.The original panchayat land now houses a veterinary clinic. The old office that stood at the place was demolished to make way for the clinic. The apathy does not end there. The main road connecting Bhamod and Mhaispur has turned into a stretch of craters, with accidents waiting to happen.When contacted, Gram Sevak Vilas Ghate said, “The old building of the group gram panchayat was dismantled to make way for a veterinary hospital. This year, we submitted two proposals to Zilla Parishad, Amravati, for new land to construct a new gram panchayat office. Sanction is awaited. Temporarily, the office is being run from a room in the ZP Primary School.”
