Calangute: Following demands from locals, the Saligao panchayat on Monday issued a stop-work notice to the promoter of a mega housing project at Bairo Alto Vaddo, Saligao. The panchayat said it will conduct a site inspection and inquiry on July 20 from 11 am and has directed the project proponent to remain present during the inspection. The notice issued by Saligao sarpanch Lucas Remedios under section 64(1)(J) of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, also stated that non-compliance would invite action under the provisions of the Act.Saligao residents alleged that the town and country planning department (TCP), Saligao panchayat, MLA and other authorities have failed to conduct a site inspection of the project after a scheduled inspection on Friday was cancelled.Last Friday, villagers met the sarpanch to demand action, stating that for almost a year they have been urging authorities to stop the ongoing work due to various irregularities in the mega project. But despite assurances, the construction is under way.“During the inspection, we will examine the concerns raised by the villagers. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inspection and in accordance with the provisions of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994,” said Remedios.
