Nagpur: Sakkardara police will issue a second reminder to Maharashtra state electricity distribution company limited (MSEDCL), seeking inspection of the site at Auliya Nagar, where a 60-year-old woman was electrocuted on July 1. The tragedy triggered outrage after Govt Medical College Hospital (GMCH) labelled her death as a heart attack. The elderly woman, Afroz Begum Azim Khan, stepped on a live electric cable in a waterlogged ditch and was electrocuted. GMCH forensic dept had claimed the spot panchnama by Sakkardara police did not have details of the damaged cable in the water-filled pit.Locals alleged the cable had been damaged nearly two months ago during drainage work under AMRUT 2.0 scheme by a Gujarat-based contractor and was left exposed and unattended. As per police sources, the post-mortem report cited heart attack as cause of death, but given the circumstances and eyewitness accounts suggesting electrocution, authorities are awaiting a technical inspection by MCDCL officials to establish the cause and fix responsibility. “We will conduct a query with forensic experts. The electrical inspection report would be required for raising a query,” said senior inspector Ramesh Khune of Sakkardara police station. “We sent a letter to MSEDCL for inspection and sought a report, but they did not respond. Hence, sending a reminder now,” said Khune.Residents expressed outrage over the alleged civic negligence and demanded strict action against those responsible, along with compensation for the victim’s family. Police registered the case as accidental death and are awaiting the civic body’s input before taking further steps in the investigation.
