Agartala: Tripura CM Dr Manik Saha said the state govt is working on a long-term and sustainable water resource management plan.Reviewing the proposed Agartala water supply system based on the Gomati River in Gomati district, Saha said detailed discussions were held on supplying drinking water by using surplus surface water from 12 rivers in the state.In the first phase, the plan aims to provide drinking water to Udaipur, Bishramganj, Bishalgarh and Agartala by utilising Gomati surface water, with officials noting it could reduce dependence on groundwater and address high iron levels found in groundwater used for drinking.The review also covered the development of a permanent Gomati-based supply system to meet future demand, including excavation of separate raw water reservoirs to store water during the dry season.Saha said the govt’s focus goes beyond Agartala, with a sustainable potable water plan aimed at meeting demand at least 25 years into the future for Tripura’s over 40 lakh population, which relies on river systems for growing water needs.

He stressed effective use of water that is being wasted or underutilised, and underlined rainwater conservation during the monsoon and its use in the dry season, including alternative arrangements for activities such as flushing, gardening and cleaning.The chief minister said the govt could achieve “the seemingly impossible” through sustained effort and cited “significant success” achieved through far-reaching thinking. He also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, saying many “seemingly impossible tasks” were accomplished under it.
