Tarn Taran: In a move aimed at reviving the party’s grassroots network, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday appointed Kanchanpreet as halka in charge for the Tarn Taran assembly constituency. The decision is viewed as part of SAD’s ongoing effort to strengthen its organisational structure in key constituencies ahead of future political battles in Punjab. Kanchanpreet has been entrusted with the responsibility of energising party cadres, expanding outreach at the village level, and co-ordinating with workers to consolidate the party’s base in the border district where both MP Amritpal Singh-led Waris Punjab De and former jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh-led SAD (Reorganised) are actively engaged with the voters.Kanchanpreet is the daughter of Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, who contested the Tarn Taran byelection as the SAD candidate. She was actively associated with the party for a considerable period and played a visible role during the bypoll campaign, where she mobilised workers and remained engaged with local issues.During the 2025 Tarn Taran bypoll, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa polled 30,558 votes, as against the winning candidate of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Harmeet Singh Sandhu, who secured 42,649 votes. On Sunday, Sukhbir posted on X: “Pleased to announce the appointment of Kanchanpreet Kaur as halka incharge for Tarn Taran assembly constituency. A young, energetic and daring member of Shiromani Akali Dal, she vociferously campaigned for her mother Principal Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa despite intense govt pressure in the recent Tarn Taran byelection. Her unwavering dedication and courage will further strengthen the party at the grassroots level in the constituency. Wishing her success and strength in the new role — may she continue to lead with the same fearless spirit.”Kanchanpreet’s name also figured prominently during the byelection when several cases were registered against her at different police stations amid intense political rivalry. At that time, SAD backed her, alleging that the cases were politically motivated and aimed at pressuring the party’s campaign. Despite the controversies, Kanchanpreet continued her political outreach and remained active in the constituency.Party insiders said her consistent engagement with grassroots workers and her ability to connect with the cadre were key factors behind her selection for the important organisational role.
