The passing of iconic playback singer S. Janaki has left the musical world heartbroken and in shock. Legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja shared an emotional tribute in a video message where he described Janaki as not only “one of India’s greatest singers” but also a person who gave everything to her music.
Ilaiyaraaja mourns the loss of S Janaki
Ilaiyaraaja took to his X (previously Instagram) handle to share a post stating that her passing was a personal loss and that Indian music had lost one of its finest voices. Ilaiyaraaja spoke about the difficult moments S. Janaki faced in her personal life. He said, “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of beloved singer Janaki Amma. It is a shocking and heartbreaking piece of news.” He added, “She carried unbearable grief in her personal life and lived through many painful experiences. It is deeply distressing to think of the hardships she endured despite bringing immense joy to millions through her music.”
Ilaiyaraaja recalls how she always strived for perfection
Looking back at the many songs they worked on together, Ilaiyaraaja said Janaki never accepted anything less than perfection. He explained that whenever he wanted a particular emotion or expression in a song, she would keep practising until she got it exactly right. He said, “I always worked hard to achieve the musical expression I wanted in every composition. Janaki Amma matched that commitment with equal determination and would continue refining the song until it reached perfection. In many ways, I can say she surpassed even my expectations.”Ilaiyaraaja said there could never be another singer like S. Janaki because of her unique voice, emotion and dedication to music. He concluded the message by praying for her soul to rest in peace and said her music and legacy would continue to inspire singers and music lovers for many years to come.
