Ranchi: Ranchi University (RU) has initiated measures to make its vocational education programmes more quality-driven, skill-oriented and employment-focused, with special attention to courses witnessing a decline in student enrolment.Notably, among the courses which have witnessed a fall in enrolment are archaeology and museology, public administration, rural development and human rights. Moreover, RU colleges also face student shortage in several of their vocational courses.For instance, the enrolment in the human rights subject was so low for the session starting in 2026 that RU has decided not to conduct the classes and return money to those who applied. Similarly, the BBA course for the session starting in 2026 is likely to be discontinued in Bundu college due to student shortage.In a meeting on Saturday evening, RU’s Centre for Vocational Studies (CVS) decided to involve permanent faculty members of the concerned postgraduate departments in teaching vocational courses, in accordance with their areas of expertise.RU is of the view that the involvement of experienced subject specialists would enrich classroom teaching and help enhance students’ academic confidence and interest in the programmes.CVS also emphasised strengthening the placement ecosystem with greater engagement with industries and potential employers and stronger industry-academia linkages.RU vice chancellor professor Saroj Sharma said, “Wherever a decline in enrolment is observed, we must understand the reasons and make collective efforts to strengthen and improve such courses. The courses should not only focus on jobs but also on preparing students for competitive examinations.”On the financial and administrative front, the committee considered the post-facto approval of the budget sanctioned for the financial year 2026–27 towards remuneration of teaching and non-teaching personnel.
