Nagpur: The Regional Transport Office (RTO), Nagpur (City), has launched the ‘Save Two-Wheeler Riders and Pedestrians’ campaign to curb rising road fatalities, identifying key accident-prone roads and junctions across the city while initiating targeted enforcement and infrastructure measures. The drive comes amid alarming figures from Maharashtra, where 36,450 road accidents in 2025 led to 15,549 deaths, with a majority of victims being two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. As part of the campaign, the RTO, under Kiran Bidkar, has zeroed in on three major stretches witnessing frequent motorcycle accidents — Wadi T-Point to Amravati Road corridor, New Katol Naka to Katol Road stretch, and Sai Mandir Cutting to Jaripatka Ring Road.At the same time, three junctions have been identified as highly vulnerable for pedestrian accidents, including Mankapur Chowk, Khobragade Chowk on Jaripatka Ring Road, and Sangharsh Nagar Chowk. These locations have recorded a higher incidence of accidents involving pedestrians.Officials said enforcement has already been stepped up on identified roads, with radar-equipped vehicles being deployed to take action against helmetless riders. Simultaneously, a series of infrastructure improvements are being planned and executed at accident-prone junctions to enhance pedestrian safety. These measures include construction of footpaths, installation of protective railings to prevent unsafe road crossing, and marking of zebra crossings. Authorities are also planning foot overbridges, subways, and improved traffic signal systems at key locations in coordination with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Public Works Department, and National Highways Authority. The campaign is aligned with the Safe System Approach, which emphasises better road engineering, stricter enforcement, and increased public awareness, in line with global targets to reduce road accident deaths by 50% by 2030.The RTO has appealed to citizens and motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules and cooperate with the administration to make the initiative successful and improve overall road safety in Nagpur.
