Nagpur: Construction of the proposed Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Super Speciality Institute of Medical Education and Research at Indora has commenced, with work on the raft foundation of the main hospital building now underway.The Rs575.79 crore project will have a capacity of 615 beds and is expected to provide major relief to residents of North and Central Nagpur and nearby areas by expanding access to specialised and super-speciality healthcare.The facility is being developed by Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA), under commissioner Sanjay Meena, on around 7.74 acres at Mouza Indora and will have nearly 9.84 lakh sq ft of built-up area. Besides the hospital, the project includes facilities for postgraduate and super-speciality medical courses, making it a major healthcare and medical education centre in the area.The project site was handed over by Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) to NMRDA on July 25, 2025, for implementation of the project. The project has received administrative approval of Rs575.79 crore under the state govt’s Dec 5, 2023 resolution.For residents of North Nagpur in particular, the hospital is expected to improve access to advanced medical treatment closer to home. Patients from Central Nagpur and adjoining areas are also likely to benefit from the availability of specialised departments and intensive care facilities at the Indora campus.Social Justice Department will bear 75% of the project expenditure, while Medical Education and Drugs Department will bear the remaining 25%. The project has been awarded to a contractor, with the construction period fixed at 36 months. The scheduled completion date is June 16, 2028.The project document states that Rs14.39 crore has been released so far, with Rs569.40 crore remaining to be provided.The proposed complex will comprise a basement, ground floor, an eight-storey hospital building, a multi-level car parking building and a service block. The basement will house facilities including a blood bank, mortuary and staff rooms, while the ground floor will have a trauma room, reception, emergency observation room and radiology facilities.Specialised departments proposed in the hospital include neurology, plastic surgery and general surgery. The second floor will have operation theatres, endoscopy, counselling and pre- and post-operative facilities. It will also house a 43-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit and a 36-bed Medical Intensive Care Unit.The fourth floor will include microbiology, pathology and administrative facilities, along with seven-bed NICU and seven-bed PICU facilities. The fifth floor will have 159 beds, while the sixth, seventh and eighth floors will each have 121 beds.The project has received environmental clearance and the required tree-related NOC. The layout plan has been approved, while the building construction plan has received tentative approval.
