Ahmedabad: He had an Audi, two high-end motorbikes, two iPhone 17 Pro Max handsets, and a taste for the high life. What he did not have was the Rs 60,000-a-month IT salary that once funded it all. After losing his job, 25-year-old Darshit (name changed) turned to bike theft to bridge the gap between his lifestyle and his income, Sola police allege. But it was not his expensive taste that led cops to him; it was his disappearing hair.Darshit, originally from Himmatnagar, was living in Chanakyapuri, pursuing a part-time MBA and working as a Blinkit delivery executive after losing his IT job, Sola police said. He was arrested in connection with a bike theft in the Sola area.But the twist that helped police catch him had nothing to do with the Audi or the expensive phones. It was his hair, or lack thereof.Police examining footage of the theft found a man in a cap riding away on the stolen bike. Another recording, however, showed what appeared to be the same suspect, but this time with a shaved head.

That was enough to send police looking for bald men in residential societies.“His appearance in different CCTV recordings helped us narrow down the suspect. We started looking for people with shaved heads and made inquiries in residential societies,” said Sola inspector K N Bhukhan.Police eventually learnt that a bald man was staying in a rented house in Chanakyapuri. Police reached the house and found Darshit. His appearance matched the person seen in the CCTV footage, police said.And the disappearing hair? No master disguise, it turned out. Police said Darshit had shaved his head because of dandruff. At the time of his arrest, police said, he was wearing a gold chain and other ornaments.Police sub-inspector N S Singh, who is investigating the case, said the 25-year-old had previously worked with an IT company and earned around Rs 60,000 a month. After losing his job, he joined Blinkit, but police alleged his new income was not enough to cover his expenses and lifestyle.Police said Darshit owned a second-hand Audi and had high-end two-wheelers. They also found that he owned two iPhone 17 Pro Max handsets with 512GB storage, though one was reportedly lost.Police recovered the stolen bike from him and are now investigating whether he was involved in other thefts.Police contacted his family in Himmatnagar during the investigation, but they allegedly declined to meet him. Singh said that due to dandruff, he had got his head shaved off.
